Application resiliency in a heterogeneous multi-cloud environment

Updated: Apr 9, 2020

Multi-cloud and Business Challenges

All cloud services are prone to failure, no doubt about it. As a result, it would be wise to say that customer success is in a hybrid or multi-cloud world. True customer success is machines becoming invisible and always available, while humans gain freedom.

Now, meeting uptime service level objectives across a multi-cloud world with multiple point tools can be very complicated and costly. What customers need is a unified solution that could help them proactively ensure application uptime across the evolving heterogeneous multi-cloud environments. In other words, customers need to provide cloud-based resiliency by increasing the confidence in RPO & RTO and ensuring business continuity through a disaster.

Veritas Resiliency Platform (VRP)

Imagine for a moment, being able to not simply just recover from unforeseen system failures and human error, but rather, prevent a catastrophic event by orchestrating the transition of your entire Enterprise, either to an alternate data center or into the public cloud with a single click. In essence, this is the promise of the Veritas Resiliency Platform – a simple solution focused on automating the recovery of and protection from an ever-growing litany of risk to which our customers' environments are exposed.

With VRP you can instill the necessary confidence both to your IT operations as well as business owners that their critical applications will not only be insulated from the aforementioned risk factors but be prepared for the transition to cloud-based environments as well. Furthermore, VRP is a complementary solution, designed to allow for the utmost levels of flexibility when choosing either a storage provider or DR target, be it on-prem on in the public cloud.

What makes VRP unique?

VRP provides a unified approach to business resiliency that helps customers proactively maintain business uptime across heterogeneous infrastructures, be it on-premise or in the cloud. The features and benefits that VRP brings to the table can be divided into 4 categories:

1. Predictability – VRP provides the ability to proactively ensure that all recover point and recovery time objectives are met by providing the necessary visibility and status to all the components essential to your applications.

  • Application health tracking to availability and backup Service Level Objectives like RTOs and RPOs

  • Pro-active, cross-site resiliency risk monitoring and notifications for application data inconsistencies

  • Zero-downtime, zero-cleanup recovery rehearsals

2. Compliance – VRP allows you to establish a clear means to non-disruptively validate your DR plan while at the same time providing not just verbose but valuable reporting details.

  • Round-the-clock visibility into resiliency health of all applications and data

  • Built-in reports for compliance including recovery rehearsal metrics that can be auto-scheduled or run as needed

3. Automation – VRP provides the ability to manage multi-tier heterogeneous applications while at the same time providing a sophisticated workflow engine designed to enable single-click recovery and migrations.

  • Start /stop orchestration for multi-tier applications

  • Single-click recovery for workloads using data movers including NetBackup

  • Customizable run book automation, with manual operation insertions

  • Single-click failover and failback

4. Flexibility – VRP is uniquely designed to offer both an alternative means of replication while at the same supporting today’s most common array and hypervisor-based data movers. Moreover, VRP allows a customer to establish the appropriate recovery classification for all manner of business workloads, be it tier 1, 2, 3 or 4. This is especially important as customers seek to streamline the IT resiliency deployment efforts when bringing new services online.

  • One solution for physical, virtual, cloud

  • Recover at choice of VM, application, multi-tier service, the entire site

  • Maximize your NetBackup investment: use backups for disaster recovery

  • Integrate into existing environment and scale as IT innovates

  • Enterprise and custom applications

In summary, customers get full automation for all resiliency operations including failover and fail-back from a single virtual machine or application to their entire site. Most importantly, DR drills are non-disruptive and can be run at any time, making it easy to prove compliance to internal and external auditors.
