New NetBackup 8.1.2 release - What's in it for you

Updated: May 13, 2023

As mentioned in the previous post, we are excited to welcome the new #NetBackup 8.1.2 release and our customers are thrilled too.

Veritas is on a mission to modernize NetBackup to continue to be the leading data management solution and 8.1.2. is a major step towards this mission.

Here are the key features & benefits, and top reasons to upgrade to 8.1.2:

Simplified user experience for backup administrators and workload administrators - through a new user interface built on top of the APIs, you get end-to-end workload driven user experience, so take #VMware as an example, trough Role-Based Access Controls, backup administrators can delegate the backup and recovery of the VMware workloads to the VMware administrators where they can backup and instantly recover data within a simple and easy to use interface.

Automation and integration - through new API that is publicly available, 100% consumable and fully documented, you can start integrating your data protection tools into NetBackup automatically so that you can automate data protection. And you can take this to the next level where you can integrate NetBackup with ticketing systems, like ServiceNow or Remedy for example so that you can start managing tickets automatically - this is from the integration standpoint.

From the automation point of view, we’ve got client upgrades - our customers have thousands and thousands of clients, so with the new release, the clients' upgrade can be fully automated.

Modern workload support - there is a lot of things when it comes to modern workload support - here I’m not referring to traditional workloads such as #Oracle, #MSSQL or VMware - Veritas has been protecting these for a long time and they will continue to improve them by the way.

When we talk about modern workloads, we’re talking about next-generation workloads like big data workloads, which by the way are mission-critical now so you got to protect them. We also include #hyper-converged environments, #NoSQL databases and open-source #RDBMS. All this is done through a scale-out framework that is designed for scale-out workloads, so with this new release, we’ve got great protection for Hadoop environments, we’ve got protection for MySQL for example, we’ve got protection for #MariaDB, #HBase, #AzureStack, so on and so forth.

And the good news is that all these workloads support are release independent, in other words, you do not have to upgrade the entire NetBackup environment to protect them – as long as you are running 8.1 or above, you can simply download a plugin from the Veritas portal and you can start protecting that workload with your existing installation of NetBackup.

Modern snapshot management – snapshots have been there for quite some time, what Veritas has done is they’ve modernized and simplified this in order for customers to adopt whatever hardware they want as fast as they want, so we’ve got a framework that releases independent and that enables fast adoption of hardware platforms. Some of the hardware that are supported since version 8.1, includes HP 3PAR, HDS, Unity and Pure storage - with 8.1.2 the snapshot management has been enhanced to bring it to the cloud, so NetBackup now integrates with Google, Azure and Amazon to start leveraging cloud-based snapshots to protect workloads deployed in these cloud environments.

Next-generation VMware protection - Veritas has been the king of scale when it comes to protecting VMware and has been backing up VMware workloads since the very beginning, however, 8.1.2 has significantly improved the backup and recovery for VMware. Some of the key features include:

  • Instant access to all virtual machines backup with flexible restore options and modern User Interface

  • We can perform single file recovery for any file systems – Veritas is filesystem agnostic

  • Single file recovery without having to put any agent on the VMs – think about that, if you have 30 thousand virtual machines, you can get rid of those agents on the 30 thousand virtual machines

  • Role-based access controls - Veritas has been interviewing and working with hundreds of VMware administrators to build this feature and what it does now it simply gives more power to the VMware administrators so that they can do bigger things, other things

  • We’ve got all kind of APIs so customers can automate data protection

  • VSAN certification and support for VMware that is deployed in an Amazon environment

Although some of the new features like modern workloads and modern snapshot support for example are release independent and our customers can take advantage of them without having to upgrade the entire NetBackup environment, we strongly recommend going for the upgrade in order to benefit from other new features such enhanced user experience, upgrade automation, and so on.

Our industry experts are here to assist you plan, prepare and smoothly upgrade your NetBackup environment from the existing version to the latest release.
