Cloud, On-Premises or Both? A Practical Data Protection Guide for the GCC

By Virgil Dobos · · 2 min read

A cloud-first policy does not mean every backup should follow the same route. Equally, keeping a workload on premises does not mean all protection must remain in the same building.

The right design depends on what the business needs to recover, where the information may be held and how the team will operate the solution.

For organisations across the GCC, these decisions deserve a workload-by-workload discussion.

Begin with the recovery target

Ask where the application would run after an outage. Restoring a large dataset to the original site can require a different design from recovering the service in a second location.

Estimate the time needed to retrieve the data, rebuild dependencies and validate the application. Include realistic connectivity, rather than relying solely on the speed of the local backup storage.

An inexpensive storage destination may become less attractive when retrieval time, transfer charges and recovery infrastructure are included.

Review where copies and access will sit

Document the location of production data, backup copies, replicas and archives. Include the access arrangements for administrators and service providers.

Data residency and governance requirements differ by organisation, sector and jurisdiction. Translate the requirements supplied by the organisation’s legal and compliance teams into technical controls. Do not assume that a single regional cloud location satisfies every requirement.

Also consider encryption, key ownership, retention and deletion. Location is one part of the control model.

Compare operating models

On-premises protection requires capacity planning, maintenance and local recovery resources. Cloud services require configuration, access management, cost monitoring and an understood recovery path.

A hybrid design can keep a fast local recovery copy while placing another copy in a separate failure domain. It can also add complexity if ownership, monitoring and restore procedures are unclear.

Assess the people who will run the system, the coverage they need and the skills they already have. A technically capable design still needs a workable support arrangement.

Virtech designs and implements protection across on-premises and cloud environments, helping customers compare practical options rather than choose a destination by default. Learn more about our backup and recovery services in the UAE and GCC.
