When NetBackup needs specialist attention

NetBackup protects the systems your business cannot afford to lose, so problems rarely stay small. Failed jobs, slow restores or an appliance running an old release all become a recovery risk.

Virtech can help when you see any of the following:

  • Jobs failing with recurring status codes, or backup windows running past your SLAs.
  • Restores that are slow, untested or have never been proven at scale.
  • Primary servers, media servers or appliances running releases that are behind the current fixed versions.
  • MSDP pools, appliance storage or cloud targets approaching capacity.
  • A NetBackup estate inherited without documentation or in-house specialist skills.
  • A renewal, appliance refresh or move towards Cohesity DataProtect that needs an evidence-based plan.

What we do

NetBackup services from one certified team

Support and break-fix

We diagnose failing jobs and status codes, media server and storage unit problems, catalogue and policy issues, client and agent connectivity, and slow restores. We work from logs and evidence, preserve recovery options and escalate to Cohesity support when a product defect requires it.

NetBackup health checks

A health check reviews your primary and media servers, appliances, policies, schedules, storage, MSDP, replication, catalogue protection and restore readiness against best practice. You receive a prioritised report with evidence, risk and a clear remediation sequence.

Version upgrades

Planned NetBackup upgrades with compatibility checks for clients, agents, operating systems and integrated targets, catalogue backup, rollback preparation and post-upgrade restore testing.

Appliances and Flex

NetBackup appliance and Flex appliance health checks, Flex OS and NetBackup upgrades, capacity expansion and hardware refresh planning, including data movement from older appliances.

Managed backup

Managed backup with 24/7 monitoring and incident management, including a 98% guaranteed backup success rate on managed services, root cause analysis and regular reporting.

Upgrades

NetBackup upgrades without surprises

Backup platforms are often upgraded far less often than the systems they protect. Recent Cohesity security advisories show why that matters: fixes for the NetBackup console and Flex OS are only available in current releases. Read our guide to the NetBackup 11.2 and Flex OS 6.4 advisories.

We confirm the supported upgrade path and current product documentation for your exact versions before any change, then plan the work around your change windows.

What we check before upgrading

  • Primary, media server and appliance versions
  • Client, agent and database plug-in compatibility
  • Operating system and hardware support
  • Replication, cloud and archive targets
  • Catalogue protection and rollback options

What you get afterwards

  • Validated backups and restores
  • Before-and-after version record
  • Audit-ready change documentation
  • Agreed follow-up actions

Ransomware resilience

Make sure NetBackup can recover you.Not just back you up.

Attackers target backups first. We design NetBackup so that protected copies survive an attack and restores are proven, using the capabilities you already own wherever possible. Learn more about NetBackup ransomware resilience.

Immutable and isolated copies

Immutable MSDP or appliance storage, isolated recovery copies and replication, so a single compromised account cannot delete your backups.

Access hardening

Role-based access, multi-person approval for destructive actions, and console and shell access limited to trusted administrators.

Tested recovery

Regular restore tests with documented results, so you have evidence for auditors and confidence before an incident.

NetBackup and Cohesity

NetBackup is now part of Cohesity

Cohesity completed its combination with Veritas' enterprise data protection business on 10 December 2024, so NetBackup and Cohesity DataProtect now come from the same vendor. Our guide to the Veritas, Cohesity and Arctera changes explains what that means for support and renewals.

A merger is not, on its own, a reason to migrate. Many organisations keep NetBackup and add Cohesity where it fits, or consolidate over time. We help you decide based on supportability, recovery objectives and cost, and we deliver both platforms. See our Cohesity services.

Useful references

Where to find the NetBackup documentation you need

Most NetBackup questions start with the right document for your exact version. These are the references we check first.

Compatibility lists

The NetBackup software compatibility lists (SCL) and hardware compatibility lists (HCL) for your release confirm supported operating systems, databases, applications and storage. Always check the list for your exact version.

Administrator and upgrade guides

The NetBackup Administrator's Guide and the Upgrade Guide for your release describe supported upgrade paths, prerequisites and post-upgrade steps.

Status codes reference

The NetBackup Status Codes Reference Guide explains each status code and its recommended actions. We combine it with job details and logs to find the root cause.

Network ports reference

The port requirements for your version and components define what your firewalls must allow between primary servers, media servers, clients and appliances.

Lifecycle information

Cohesity's support lifecycle information for NetBackup shows when each version reaches the end of standard support, which drives upgrade timing.

Security advisories

Cohesity security advisories list affected versions and fixed releases. Read our NetBackup 11.2 advisory guide.

We confirm versions, architecture, symptoms, recent changes and the recovery options available.

  3. 3

    Agree the action

We define priority, responsibilities, access, onsite or remote delivery and any change controls.

  4. 4

    Resolve and prove it

We implement the agreed work, validate backups and restores, and document actions and residual risks.

  5. 5

    Stay covered

Ongoing support or managed backup keeps the estate healthy, monitored and current.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is NetBackup end of life?

No. NetBackup continues as a Cohesity product following the Cohesity and Veritas combination in December 2024. Individual NetBackup versions do reach the end of their support life, so check the lifecycle of the version you run. We can review your estate and plan an upgrade to a supported release.

Who supports NetBackup now that Veritas has split?

NetBackup is owned and supported by Cohesity. Virtech provides local NetBackup support, health checks, upgrades and managed services in the UAE and remotely across the GCC, and coordinates with Cohesity support when a product defect requires it.

What is the latest NetBackup version?

Releases change regularly, so confirm the current version in Cohesity's documentation. At the time of writing, the recent security fixes require NetBackup 11.2 or later and Flex OS 6.4 or later on Flex appliances. We check the right target version for your environment before planning an upgrade.

Which ports does NetBackup use?

It depends on the version and the components you run. Port 1556 (PBX) and port 13724 (vnetd) are the ones most commonly required between NetBackup hosts, but appliances, cloud targets, web services and some agents need others. We review your firewall rules against the port reference for your exact version.

How do you troubleshoot NetBackup status codes?

We start from the status code and the job details, then use the relevant logs and the Status Codes Reference Guide to find the root cause, rather than simply rerunning the job. Recurring codes usually point to a configuration, network, storage or client issue that can be fixed permanently.

Can you upgrade our NetBackup appliances or Flex appliances?

Yes. We plan and deliver NetBackup and Flex OS upgrades on appliances, including compatibility checks, rollback preparation and restore testing afterwards. We also help plan capacity expansion and hardware refreshes.

NetBackup or Veeam: which is better?

Both are capable platforms with different strengths. NetBackup is typically chosen for large, mixed enterprise estates with many workload types, appliances and strict policy control. Veeam is widely used in virtualised environments. The right choice depends on your workloads, scale, recovery objectives and team skills. We support Veeam as well as NetBackup and Cohesity, so we can give you a practical comparison for your environment.

NetBackup or Backup Exec: what is the difference?

NetBackup is an enterprise platform for large, distributed estates, now part of Cohesity. Backup Exec is aimed at small and mid-sized environments and is a separate product line. We support both. See our Backup Exec services.

Should we move from NetBackup to Cohesity DataProtect?

Not automatically. A move makes sense when it improves recovery, operations or cost for your environment. Many organisations run both and consolidate over time. We assess your estate and help you decide, then deliver either path.

Can you help with NetBackup licences and renewals?

Yes. We quote NetBackup licences, capacity and maintenance renewals and review your usage first, so you renew what you need. See licence renewals.
