Enterprise Vault Outlook Add-in: Download, Versions and Deployment

By Virgil Dobos · · 2 min read

Outlook on a laptop showing Enterprise Vault archived items

The Enterprise Vault Outlook add-in is what most users actually see of Enterprise Vault: the archive buttons, the shortcuts that open archived items, and search inside Outlook. When it is missing, disabled or the wrong version, users report that "the archive is broken" even when the server is healthy.

This guide covers where to get the add-in, how to pick the right package, how organisations usually deploy it, and what to check when it stops working.

Where to download the Outlook add-in

The Outlook add-in is part of the Enterprise Vault software that Arctera supplies to licensed customers. Download it from your Arctera support or entitlement portal, under the Enterprise Vault release that matches your servers. Avoid third-party download sites: the package must match your server version, and an unofficial installer is a security risk.

If you cannot access the portal, read our note on the new Enterprise Vault support portals. Virtech can also help licensed customers obtain the correct package.

Choose the right package

  • Match the Outlook bitness, not Windows. Use the 64-bit (x64) add-in for 64-bit Outlook and the 32-bit add-in for 32-bit Outlook, even on 64-bit Windows. In Outlook, check File > Office Account > About Outlook.
  • Match the server version. Use the add-in from the same Enterprise Vault release as your servers, or a combination the compatibility charts list as supported.
  • Check the Outlook build. Microsoft 365 Apps update often. Confirm your Outlook channel and build against the Enterprise Vault compatibility charts before a wide rollout.
  • Note the new Outlook for Windows. The classic COM add-in model does not apply to the new Outlook. Check Arctera's current guidance for which clients your release supports.

How organisations deploy it

Most organisations deploy the add-in silently with their software distribution tool, such as Microsoft Intune, Configuration Manager or Group Policy, using the MSI package and the documented installation properties. Test in a pilot group that covers every Outlook build and channel in use before deploying widely.

Server-side settings control much of the add-in's behaviour through Enterprise Vault policies: which buttons users see, whether they can archive manually, and how shortcuts behave. Review those policies when you change the client, not just the installer.

When the add-in stops working

Symptom First thing to check
Archive buttons have disappeared Outlook may have disabled the add-in: check File > Options > Add-ins and the disabled items list
Shortcuts will not open Whether the item opens in the web search. If yes, look at the client, if no, see unable to retrieve archived item
Problems began after an Office update The Outlook build against the compatibility charts for your add-in version
Works for some users only Differences in Outlook bitness, channel, profile or policy assignment
Slow Outlook start Add-in load time, profile size and network access to the Enterprise Vault server

Planning an upgrade?

Client and server versions move together. Plan the add-in rollout as part of any Enterprise Vault upgrade or move to Exchange Online, see Enterprise Vault and Microsoft 365.

Virtech's Enterprise Vault team plans client rollouts, checks compatibility and supports organisations onsite across the UAE and remotely across the GCC.
